Booker T. Washington Foundation donates $150,000 to fund teaching positions

With budget woes leading to districtwide cost cutting, concerned alumni and supporters of one Tulsa public school are stepping in with a $150,000 gift. In a news conference Thursday at the school, the Booker T. Washington Foundation for Excellence announced that it will make a donation in that amount to Booker T. Washington High School specifically to pay for four teaching positions the school is slated to lose going into next school year. BTW was facing the loss of 10 total teacher positions for 2016-17, according to recent district staffing plans. District officials said the reduction would result from either attrition, or teachers being moved to other school sites, as determined by need. Speakers at the news conference on Thursday said those losses, however, would deal a blow to BTW’s ability to maintain its tradition of excellence.
